“I felt like the prodigal son being welcomed home with loving jubilation! I could once again feel the warm love of Jesus in my heart.”
Meet the rest of my class
My name is Hannah Looman. I am called to follow Christ on the path of the Beatitudes as a sister with the Community of the Beatitudes. This is my story.
I grew up in Durango, Colorado on my family’s fourth-generation Quarter horse ranch, where I loved to ride and show horses. I was raised Catholic, attended Catholic school, and loved Jesus and reading about the saints. When I was 14, my mother passed away from cancer. This was a very difficult period for me and my family, and I fell away from the Church for a time. Eventually, though, I realized that I had a void in my heart which I was searching to fill.
At college, I was reminded of God’s love for me. I began to read the Bible and was drawn to attend Mass. I discovered a community of Catholic young adults who were on fire for the Faith. Inspired by their deep passion, I decided to attend confession for the first time in years. I felt like the prodigal son being welcomed home with loving jubilation! I could once again feel the warm love of Jesus in my heart, which was something I had walled off in my life for a long time, and I pleaded with God to never let me stray again.
In 2022, I felt God inviting me to surrender my entire life to Him. I considered religious life, yet my plans were headed in an entirely different direction, as I was studying to be an equine veterinarian. I finished my schooling and accepted a job in Texas. Though I enjoyed my work very much, my heart continued to be drawn towards something deeper. The Lord was calling me to trust Him as He opened a new path forward.
I had met a priest from the Community of the Beatitudes a few years earlier, and we’d stayed in touch. He had invited me to participate in an online discipleship program, and eventually, I was offered an internship with Beatitude Missions. I fell in love with the Community.
The Community of the Beatitudes consists of priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay people, all living Christian life together as one spiritual family, carrying a shared life out into the world through evangelization and service.
Similar to the Carmelite spirituality of St. Therese the Little Flower, contemplation is key to the daily life of the Community. Contemplative prayer is where we build personal relationships with God and abide in His love. What we receive in contemplation overflows into daily work.
The Community has a heart for the poor and suffering, and performs numerous works of compassion and humanitarian aid, including running hospitals, orphanages, women’s shelters, and welcoming people with various disabilities.
I look forward to sharing in these forms of outreach as a religious sister, as well as to participating in the New Evangelization with the Community, including through media, retreats, hospitality, pilgrimages, conferences, family and youth ministry, and student and young adult ministry. I desire a life with contemplative prayer as the source of all I do, surrounded by people all striving for the same goal — to be united with Christ and have our eyes set on Heaven while loving those around us.
