My name is Alejandro Castineyra. I am discerning serving Christ and His Church as a priest for the Diocese of Laredo. This is my story.
I grew up in Laredo, Texas with a single parent and sibling. My mother raised us Catholic, taking us to Mass every Sunday, and even signed me up to become an altar server as a boy. I wasn’t particularly motivated to learn more about my Faith as a child. This didn’t change until I reached college and encountered a Protestant group that challenged my beliefs. That encounter lit a fire in my heart – a fire which soon, I couldn’t ignore.
The idea of becoming a priest first occurred to me as a young child, and throughout my adolescence it would continue to pop into my mind. Each time, though, I would find a reason not to pursue the idea. Eventually, during college, my draw to the Church had grown so much that learning about the Faith became more interesting to me than my own major!
More and more frequently, a friend or priest would ask me if I was planning to become a priest. When they began to ask my mother the same question, I knew that it was really God asking. The pull towards the priesthood became harder and harder to ignore. I tried to find objections to avoid answering the call, but through prayer, God continued to reveal that none of these objections really mattered.
One day, after going to Confession, I heard the voice of God calling me to surrender my life to His will – so I did. Instead of fighting it, I was finally ready to embrace God’s call!
As I follow God’s calling to the priesthood, I seek others to accompany me on this journey. May we meet so that I can share more? Until then, please keep me and my classmates in prayer, and feel free to reach out to me at AlejandroCastineyra@rescuevocations.org.
