My name is Chance Armstrong. I am discerning serving Christ and His Church as a priest for the Diocese of Gaylord. This is my story.
I grew up in Traverse City, Michigan surrounded by the natural beauty of rural community. Though I wasn’t raised in the Faith, I was raised in familial love, friendship, and deep connection to the land. I became Catholic at the age of 30, when curiosity grew into love.
While living in New York City, I randomly felt a pull one day to enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral. I attended Mass and was captivated. From that day on, my curiosity about the Catholic Faith grew. I embarked on a gradual journey of exploration, learning as much as I could about the Faith. With each step forward, I felt my relationship with God grow deeper. I was falling in love with God for the first time in my life.
I was finally brought into the Church in 2023, and soon after, began to feel that God was calling me to something deeper. I wasn’t exactly unhappy with my life, but I wasn’t at peace either. I knew there had to be something more that God wanted me to do – a bigger way to offer myself to the Lord.
A priest mentor told me that I needed to stop chasing the wrong things, and from that moment on, something shifted. Suddenly, for the first time, I could see that the life I had been building for myself might not be the life I was truly made for.
As I follow God’s calling to the priesthood, I seek others to accompany me on this journey. May we meet so that I can share more? Until then, please keep me and my classmates in prayer, and feel free to reach out to me at Chance.Armstrong@rescuevocations.org.
