My name is Eloy Cuevas. I am discerning serving Christ and His Church as a priest for the Diocese of Yakima. This is my story.
I grew up in a Catholic family in Jalisco, Mexico. Along with my six brothers, I was raised to know the importance of participating in the life of the Church. My parents brought us to Mass every Sunday, and eventually I became an altar server because I loved being close to the liturgy. Faith was intrinsic to my family life – not something that we chose to do, but just part of who we were.
When I was eighteen years old, I moved to the United States. I had to make a choice to continue to practice my Faith actively, or let it fade away. I loved the Catholic Faith, so I began to spend more time at Mass and Adoration.
I had long thought of priests as “super humans” who always knew they were special and set apart for more. One day, though, a discussion with a mentor priest revealed to me that priests are simply normal men who answer God’s call. I began to think more seriously about following the path to the priesthood. Many people shared with me that they were praying for my discernment, and this support was, and continues to be, incredibly helpful.
I know full well that I am still a work in progress, learning each day to be more open to prayer, willing to listen, and to be corrected when needed. I cannot walk this path on my own, but I know that God will never forsake me while striving to grow closer to Him.
As I follow God’s calling to the priesthood, I seek others to accompany me on this journey. May we meet so that I can share more? Until then, please keep me and my classmates in prayer, and feel free to reach out to me at Eloy.Cuevas@rescuevocations.org.
