Meet the rest of my class
My name is Sergio Martinez. I am discerning a call to serve Christ and His Church as a priestwith the Diocese of Laredo. This is my story.
I am from a small border community called Eagle Pass, Texas, and grew up a deeply faithful Anglican. My father was an Anglican minister, and so church involvement was obviously a large part of our family life. At a young age, I learned to pray from my mother. While not Catholic, my parents had entrusted me to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary while I was still in utero. As such, I developed a love for Our Blessed Mother. As my relationship with God grew, I often asked what He wanted from me – though I was afraid of the answer.
In time, Our Blessed Mother drew me to the Catholic Church. Joining the Catholic Church meant taking greater ownership of my faith, and I realized that God was inviting me to trust Him and surrender my own plans. Throughout my life, the possibility of a priestly vocation was present, though I would try to put the thought aside. However, the question kept returning, as well as a voice that said, “Follow Me.” While on a retreat, I wanted to be open to what God might show me and where He had been leading me. I realized that perhaps the question was not whether I could imagine myself becoming a priest — the deeper question was whether I was willing to let God lead me somewhere I could not yet see. That realization did not suddenly make everything easy or certain. Instead, it gave me the courage to take the next step.
